Gaoligongshan Gr

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
mid-Qingbaikouan through Sinian (mid-Tonian through Ediacaran), Qb (36)

Province:
Yunnan

Type Locality and Naming

Westernmost Yunnan. The Gaoligongshan Gr derived from the Gaoligongshan metamorphic rock named by The Yunnan party of Regional Geological Survey in 1965. Cao Renguan formally renamed it in 1979 on Precambrian of Yunnan Province. The typical section is situated in Gaoligongshan area, in the west of Nujiang River, Yunnan Province.

Synonym: (高黎贡山群)

Lithology and Thickness

The Gaoligongshan Gr is dominated by high-grade metamorphic gneiss, schist and marble, which is more than 10,000 m thick. From the top downward, it was subdivided into five formations. The Biluoxueshan Fm is dominated by mica-schist and gneiss. The Nujiang Fm is composed of marble and schist. The Buda Fm is mica-gneiss intercalated with schist and marble. The Sidudi Fm consists of schist interbedded with marble. The Fugong Fm is a mica-gneiss intercalated with schist and marble.

Lithology Pattern:
Gneiss

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformable onto the underlying Damenglong Gr (Mesoproterozoic that is underlying all of West Yunnan)

Upper contact

Overlain by Paleozoic (details not given)

Regional extent

Westernmost Yunnan. Gaoligongshan area, in the west of Nujiang River, Yunnan Province.

Fossils

The low-grade metamorphic rock in the periphery yields trilobites Proceratopyge sp., Hedonaspis sp. etc., but the high-grade metamorphic rock has nothing at all.

Age

Lacking data of the isotopic geochronology, the age of the Gaoligongshan Group is still controversial. According to the degree of metamorphism, it was considered to correlate with the Megu System in Myanmar and temporarily referred to Meso-Neoproterozoic. Entire mid-Qingbaikouan through Sinian (mid-Tonian through Ediacaran) span given on schematic stratigraphic column – dotted.
